ARL MSRC Participates in 2003 UGC

By Brian Simmonds

It was late spring and the weather was already warm in most of the country when the meeting of the minds, known as the High Performance Computing Modernization Program Users Group Conference 2003, took place in the high-tech city of Bellevue, Wash. The five-day conference consisted of presentations, meetings, and random socialization with peers.

ARL had a good showing with 13 papers presented, ranging from optimization of weather model code to the creation of the "Science World" visualization environment. There were also many birds-of-a-feather meetings where users could interact with their counterparts from other centers.

This year's attendees and presenters found plenty to do in the off hours of the conference. Many ventured to nearby Seattle to take in the sights, sounds, tastes, and nightlife. For the social event, attendees were taken, via ferry boat, to Tillacum Village, a northwest Native American cultural center and restaurant where they were treated to a traditional fire-baked salmon dinner and a spectacular dance show.

An award ceremony was also conducted at the facility where Tom Kendall, ARL MSRC Chief Engineer, received an award as well as our own Dr. N. Radhakrishnan, former director of Computational & Information Sciences Directorate.
